Best Quote from the pontification of post-Election pundits…
October 16, 2008 | Filed Under Politics, Social idiocy | No Comments
Some of you may know that yesterday we had a federal election here in Canada. The net result was yet another Conservative minority government. Oh, the Conservatives are patting themselves on the back, saying they made “incremental gains”, and the liberals are devolving into calls for a ”leadership” review (since they didn’t win) , but the truth of the matter is that for all the posturing taking place, nothing has really changed. It’s the same people (give or take a few seat-changes) back in parliament, squabbling about the same things.
This was such an uninspired race, with nothing really new or compelling coming from the major parties. And that utter lack of content translated into apathy in the populace. This election saw our lowest voter turnout on record. Just under 60%. I guess people just couldn’t be bothered. On the positive side, we aren’t yet as apathetic as the American populace when it comes to showing up at the polls, since they haven’t shown more than a 60% turnout since 1968.
Rick Mercer of the Mercer Report put it best, “What we had here was a phenomenal waste of 300 million dollars.”
*sigh*

And the honorary Heartless Bitch of the week award goes to….
September 29, 2008 | Filed Under Politics, The Heartless Bitch Way | 2 Comments
… Heather Malik, for her heartlessly scathing article on Sarah Palin, and her refusal to apologize for her opinion piece originally published and then yanked by the CBC. Other (male) journalists have said as much or worse, and not gotten the same backlash. Yes, it was hyperbolic. Yes, some of it was over the top, but much of it was dead on the money as far as I am concerned, and the CBC editors are a bunch of spineless wimps. A huge heartless raspberry to the CBC for apologizing for, and pulling the piece. It was *opinion*. So much for free speech.

SNL’s spoof on Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/13/tina-fey-as-sarah-palin-o_n_126249.html
“In conclusion, I invite the media to all grow a pair. And if you can’t, I will lend you mine.”
God help us all if the Republicans get elected again. And I’m not even American. Look at what your economy is doing at the hands of the Republicans. Do you REALLY want to re-elect these assholes?
I mean, I’d love to see more women in politics, but not there simply because they have a vagina or look good in front of the media. Palin’s politics and beliefs scare me, as does her vapidness. She is against abortion, even in cases of incest and rape. She thinks ”abstinence” should be the only thing taught in schools. Oh, well THAT kind of teaching really helped her OWN child, right? Too bad the kid didn’t learn about important things like BIRTH CONTROL, since the whole abstinence thing clearly didn’t ”take”.
Personally, I couldn’t give a shit about what goes on in the woman’s personal life or family except for the fucking hypocrisy of it all. (And for a great look at that hypocrisy exposed, check out this episode of The Daily Show)
I’d love to see a woman in the White House, unfortunately, this one is an embarrassment to us all.

International Women’s Day
March 8, 2007 | Filed Under Politics, Popculture, The Heartless Bitch Way | 1 Comment
Today is International Women's Day - really, it's a day to celebrate ordinary women making history, but it's also a day to highlight that women still have a long way to go before they are treated as equals in the world at large. I wish I could say we didn't need this day - that things were so wonderfully equal in the world that we didn't need to recognize and support the struggle of so many women in the world who are at best treated as second class citizens and at worst, slaves or chattel. There are still places in the world where an 11 year old girl can be forced to marry her rapist, or be stoned to death for "allowing" the rape to happen. There are still places where parents are so poor, and girls are so undervalued, that young girls are sold into slavery in clothing sweatshops and brothels.
Even in the "first world" nations, where most countries have bills of rights that protect women and minorities, we still don't see true equality. All we have to do is look at the Canadian government and we can see how under-represented women are in the places of power. It seems that every time we turn around women's reproductive rights are under attack in the US and Canada.
HBI in its own small way, is chipping away at the boxes that society would put us all in. We aren't afraid to tell the Emperor that his saggy, hairy ass is showing. We provide that virtual kick to the frontal lobe that tells people to get their shit together and be in Total Control of their own lives - stop blaming others, stop making the same stupid mistakes over and over again. We challenge women and men alike to reject the status quo, act like the adults that they are, and to not only expect equality, but to make that expectation clear.
So in addition to celebrating ordinary and extraordinary women who have made a difference in the world, I urge you to do something to make a difference. Do something small to chip away at the walls that still hold us back in society. Do something big for women who are not so fortunate. Just do something. Here is a list of things you can do to make a difference. Some don't even cost money.
- Fight Apathy. Do something that takes you outside your "comfort zone" - Express an opinion. Be LARGE. Be Loud. Speak out when you see something that marginalizes women or stereotypes us. Stand up for yourself. Make a statement.
- Write a politician and speak out about injustices in your community or in the world at large. Urge your government representatives to be a part of the solution and not to support the causes of the problems that cause war, poverty, and the marginalization of women and children world-wide.
- Clean out your closet and give those clothes you never wear to a women's shelter in your city.
- Buy a copy of Women of the World, Acoustic from Putumayo Records - because it's not only a great album of mellow, feel-good music from some fabulous female artists, (I really like the Putumayo label and the music they produce and support,) a portion the proceeds will be donated to the Global Fund For Women in support of their efforts to promote and defend the human rights of women and girls.
- Make a commitment to support girls in developing countries through non-denominal organizations like Plan Canada, or to help in the fight to Stop Child Trafficking through Plan USA, or any one of the 60 "Plan" organizations world-wide.
- Book a Working Vacation and donate some time and energy to support the disadvantaged in developing countries.
- Be a positive role model for a young girl.
- Write a blog entry in support of International Women's day, honoring a woman in your community who has bucked the system, and fought for justice and equality.
- Support Oxfam in their efforts to protect Women's rights in Canada, the UK, the USA, and around the world. (If you are in Calgary, Alberta, take in ROXFAM).
- Participate in an International Women's Day Event in your community. (there are 431 events in 42 countries!)
- Sign up for a class to learn a skill that makes you more self-sufficient and independent.
- Buy a book or two from our Kid's Book list for your daughter, niece or granddaughter.
- Look in the mirror and decide that you really LIKE who you see and the body she inhabits!

Is it just me….

…. or is George Bush just the most GORMLESS-looking leader on the face of the planet? I mean, there is NO way you could ever apply the phrase “intelligent countenance” to him. He has small, beady eyes, and he always looks like a deer in the headlights when he talks to the press. The absolute worst exposition of his trademarked stupified expression has to be on Farenheit 911… when he is told about the attacks on the World Trade Center. Did you see that? I’ve seen more intelligent expressions on the “special” workers down at the local employment training center.
But hey… You guys elected him. I have NO idea why.

Steve-o needs to grow some bigger balls
December 22, 2006 | Filed Under Politics, Social idiocy | No Comments
The bf knows how to get me riled up. He does it intentionally by sending me articles like this, wherein our embarassingly 1950’s prime minister is quoted as saying,
Asked about whether he has ever taken a ride with Mrs. Harper as she is driving her motorcycle, he said no. “You’ve got to worry about image. I don’t want to be on the back with my wife driving.”
Wow. What a modern and enlightened male! What’s next? Having her walk three steps behind you?
And THIS is what is leading our country. *argh* (And no, I did not vote for him or his party). The only positive side of this is that it could be worse – we could have BUSH for our country’s leader…
Hey Steve, why don’t you admit the REAL reason you won’t get on that bike with her: You don’t want the press to see you stain your shorts in terror the moment she top-ends that throttle.
